ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
About Us
The Western Inter-University Geosciences Conference (WIUGC) is a student-run conference hosted annually, alternating between universities across Western Canada.
This year we celebrate the 57th anniversary of the conference by hosting the event in Winnipeg from January 4th to 7th, organized by undergraduate geoscience students from the University of Manitoba.
In addition to student participants, we welcome professional delegates from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia to join us in the heart of Canada, with the goal of providing opportunities for students to develop their early careers and increase their knowledge within the industry.
Event Highlights & Summary
We are excited to provide several events at WIUGC 2024 which will grow students' geological understandings, share knowledge about opportunities within Manitoba, and foster new relationships between geoscience students and industry professionals.
As part of our event program, we will offer three field trip options (details to be announced) designed to share some of the work conducted in Manitoba with participants. We will delve into a wide range of geoscience topics, with technical talks by experts from both industrial and academic perspectives. An exhibition hall will allow students to engage with professionals from companies and organizations across Western Canada. Additionally, undergraduate and graduate students will get the opportunity to showcase their own work during our poster and student talk competitions and to compete against one another in the Challenge Bowl hosted by the CSEG. Finally, we will enjoy a banquet to award the competition winners and welcome a presentation from our keynote speaker, UofM alumnus Shastri Ramnath, who eagerly anticipates inspiring geoscience students as they embark on their early careers.
Beyond the academic and career-focused events, we have organized several social functions to help students build connections and networks.
We look forward to welcoming geoscience students from across Western Canada with the hope of creating a sense of community and creating lasting bonds that will benefit participants throughout their careers.
